Entrepreneurship for the earthquake-affected region

After an intensive brainstorming on how best EDII could serve the earthquake-affected Kutch and Saurashtra regions, a comprehensive package of intervention was conceived at the Institute way back in March 2001. It was perceived that the intervention should be sustainable, reconstructing and long-lasting in nature. Accordingly, Enterprise Development and Enterprise Revival were targeted.

The project, sanctioned by the European Union, aimed at economic regeneration through micro enterprise creation, industrial rehabilitation and corporate linkage. In total, 2,250 artisan units, 2,700 potential entrepreneurs from rural areas, 1,500 potential entrepreneurs from urban and semi-urban areas and 455 adversely-affected enterprises were targeted to be established/re-established.

The task was accomplished by partnering with around 25 NGOs located in the region. Around 100 NGO functionaries and 15 rehabilitation advisors were developed to deliver the necessary inputs. The project comprised a number of activities centred on Needs Assessment, Survey, Workshops of Stakeholders, Trainers’ Training Programmes, Entrepreneurship Development Programmes, Real Entrepreneurship Development Programmes, Group Entrepreneurship Development Programmes, Industrial Rehabilitation Programme and Corporate Linkage Programme (CLP). The CLP was innovative and most challenging as it involved networking and matching of around 25 corporate houses with some 260 small and medium enterprises for possible sub-contracting, ancillarisation and technology upgradation.

This was a prestigious project in terms of magnitude, context and comprehensiveness. Successful completion of the work helped develop replicable models of economic regeneration of disaster-struck regions across the globe and thus earned development status to entrepreneurship.

EDII’s initiatives stand out because they support market-demand and display social responsiveness. During the year 2001, when the Earthquake struck Gujarat, EDII rose to the occasion and came up with a development-model, which targeted enterprise development and revival in the region. The project was taken up under support of the European Union. Successful and satisfactory completion of the work even helped develop a replicable model for the economic regeneration of disaster-struck regions across the globe and thus earned development status to entrepreneurship. EDI model of economic regeneration was replicated by other multilateral agencies in Tsunami affected regions.
