Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)

Against the backdrop that the country needs entrepreneurs to ensure economic development and to create job opportunities, it is only prudent to introduce research programmes in entrepreneurship education to create scholars and thought leaders who can in turn, promote entrepreneurship widely. With this objective, EDII launched the first-of-its-kind, ‘Fellow Programme in Management’ with emphasis on entrepreneurship in year 2014. The programme is designed to address the gaps in the availability of trained educators, researchers, business consultants and resource persons in entrepreneurship at higher learning institutions/professional organisations/ Government departments/industry in India. The cadre of academicians thus created will raise the standards of education and research, thereby ensuring wider acceptance of entrepreneurship as a career option in the society.

 

The FPM shall highlight on the following:

  • Foundation of theoretical, empirical and applied aspects in major areas of Entrepreneurship.
  • Professional ethics and intellectual honesty.
  • Interdisciplinary research and training of high quality.
  • Proficient activities and joint academic efforts.
  • Networking with leading entrepreneurship and research institutions globally.

Who Should Join?

Master’s Degree or equivalent in Engineering/ Technology/ Management/ Economics/ Social Science/ Biological Science/ Pure Science/ Commerce/ Humanities with FIRST CLASS will be considered for admission to Fellowship Programme. Those appearing for their final examination in the respective discipline can also apply. Such students if selected will be provisionally admitted provided they complete all requirements obtaining their master’s degree before 30th September of the year.

Course Objective

The programme will be offered with following objectives:

1. To groom potential scholars and make them competent and innovative researchers and educators in various facets of entrepreneurship; 
2. To encourage inter-disciplinary high calibre research studies in entrepreneurship with policy implications; 
3. To investigate synergy between theory and practice of entrepreneurship as relevant to the Indian context; and accordingly strengthen entrepreneurship education and research ecosystem in the country. 
4. To fulfil the gaps in availability of indigenously trained educators, researchers and resource persons in entrepreneurship at higher learning institutions in India; and 
5. To motivate scholars to take up theoretical and empirical research work leading to policy papers and publications in journals of repute.

Course Architecture

First Year Courses

Trimester I

This course is designed to provide a conceptual and applied foundation of entrepreneurship as a discipline, area of study and also as a career option. The prime motive of the course is to expose, excite and elevate the motivation of the students to the field of entrepreneurship. The course is built around the concepts of entrepreneurial qualities, motivational factors and triggers for entrepreneurship, enterprise creation and entrepreneurship process. The course also involves development of entrepreneurship as an area of study from economic and sociological viewpoints.

Financial decisions impact virtually every area of the business. A proper understanding of the basic accounting mechanisms and skills to develop profit and loss accounts for various business transactions involved in running any firm is core to management training. With this rationale, the present course ‘Financial Accounting’ aims at covering the basic topics to enable students develop requisite accounting skills. This course comprises of basic accounting vocabulary, accounting principles and conventions, understanding income statement, balance sheet and analysis cash flow, and introduction financial statement analysis and depreciation methods. The course explores the theory with relevance to the real-world business problems through analytical approach.

This course focuses on conceptual and practical aspects of advanced statistical techniques essential for the students of Business Entrepreneurship. Spread over two sections and 24 sessions the course deals with important topics related to Regression, Factor Analysis, and other Multivariate techniques.

Trimester II

This course aims to develop entrepreneurship among students using laboratory method. A laboratory experience can help to develop clearer idea of personal behavior and to discover behavioral alternative that are available to develop entrepreneurship, and to decide whether an individual wants to change his/her behavior by choosing and practicing an alternative. In order to apply this method students are required to become aware of the way he/she behaves and does things. It gives an idea of the basis for improvement and change. Also it is possible that student may get feedback from others on their performance, this will be also a source of entrepreneurship development.

Content Under Development.

This course focuses on conceptual and practical aspects of advanced statistical techniques essential for the students of Business Entrepreneurship. Spread over two sections and 24 sessions the course deals with important topics related to Regression, Factor Analysis, and other Multivariate techniques.

The subject aims to improve academic writing skills of doctoral student. This course will help participant to develop planning, drafting and editing skills which are essential when writing a dissertation or thesis. Participant will also practice techniques and language to give written style a more formal and academic tone. During the course participant will be asked to write book reviews, policy paper’s review, writing of monograph and review of academic literature.

Trimester III

This course is an endeavor towards building the creative thinking abilities among the students. The course intends to make them understand the importance of creativity & innovation from entrepreneurial perspective such that they can develop thinking abilities towards resolving the people’s problems. The course also intends to help students generate creative ideas to the people’s problems and successfully scale it to the level of commercialization of idea in the form of innovation.

Research for business commences with searching an opportunity and goes further into identifying a trade/brand name, estimation of demand and identification of an appropriate market segment. It is also widely used in analysing the prevailing status of competition in the domain one plans to venture into. In the course of business one also needs to assess consumers’ perceptions, preferences and satisfaction with respect to products and services being offered. Furthermore, research helps in planning advertisement campaigns to create brand image and to boost up sales. In short, business research deals with different types of explorations required for reliable decision making while starting or executing a business.

This course focuses on how firms formulate, implement, and evaluate strategies in a turbulent rapidly changing environment. Students will focus on integrated decision making in terms of strategy formation, implementation, and evaluation. The major objectives of the course are; elucidation of the concepts, research, and theories of strategic management; defining the ethical parameters for business policy makers; analysis and evaluation, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the performance of businesses and the people responsible for strategic decisions and discussion on environmental issues and trends for organizational strategy and effectiveness.

Fees and Financial Aids

The fee for the FPM (2016-20) is Rs.8,37,555 (Rs. Eight Lakh, Thirty Seven Thousand Five Hundred Fifty Five only) which includes costs of tuition, library, basic teaching material, examination and use of computer laboratory, cost of admission form, refundable caution money and one time alumni fee.

A. Fellowship for EDII-Sponsored Candidates:

The institute has provision of providing fellowship support (tuition-fee waiver and stipend) to few selected and deserving candidates which covers stipend, contingency grants and tuition fee waiver. The cost of library, basic teaching material, examination and use of computer laboratory will be deducted from the candidates’ stipend as per the norms of the institute.

In addition, the fellowship candidates will also need to pay Rs.1000 towards admission form and Rs.10000 as refundable caution money.

B. Stipend &Contingency Grant for EDII-sponsored Candidates:

Rs.20000/- per month for the first two years, and will go up to Rs.25000/- per month depending upon the candidate’s progress in the third and fourth year. In addition, deserving candidates can avail contingency grants of up to Rs.30000 in the first year of study, and up to Rs.20000/- per year for subsequent three years.

FAQs

It is the doctoral level programme and duration of which is four years. However, under special circumstances extension of one more year may be granted without any financial aid.

This is a four year full-time programme and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India

Attested copies of certificates and grade-sheets (10th to Post-graduation), Statement of Purpose and Letter of Sponsorship from Organisation, if applying under sponsored category, No Objection Certificate from Employer (if employed) and Tentative Research Proposal.

It is combination of Lectures, Group Discussions, Case Studies and Simulation Games. A candidate’s performance is evaluated through classroom tests, assignments, presentations, and term-end examinations.

The programme comprises total four phases in which two phases are for course work and rest for proposal development and thesis work. Course work (total 65 credits) can be completed in 6 terms spread over two academic years. The final phase comprises of completion of Area Specific Core Courses, Research Methodology and Academic Writing Course (total 25 Credits).

Candidates who have passed their two year management programme (MBA or PG Degree/Diploma in Management or Entrepreneurship) from an AICTE/UGC recognized institute/University and have work experience of more than two years will have to pass the examination of compulsory papers, however they may be exempted from the classes in consultation with instructors in the first year.

Master’s or equivalent in Engineering / Technology / Management/ Economics / Social Science / Biological Science / pure Science / Commerce / Humanities degree holder with First Class are eligible for applying the programme. Final Selection will be based on Entrepreneurship Research Aptitude Test (ERAT) of EDI, academic qualification and work experience, tentative research proposal and personal interview.

It is a written test designed to test the analytical writing abilities wherein candidate needs make an analysis of small case and answer two questions in about 90 minutes. This is just to test the ability of the aspirant to put down his/her thoughts in a structured manner.

Fellowships are available to deserving candidates selected by the Selection Committee in the form of tuition-fee waiver, monthly stipend and yearly contingencies grant.

An additional financial support is available for EDII-sponsored candidates during their thesis phases, in the form of extra funds up to Rs.30,000/- for field research (if needed).

EDI has separate hostel accommodation for Boys and Girls. EDI provide double occupancy air conditioned hostel rooms.

It is an autonomous and not-for-profit institute, set up in 1983, sponsored by apex financial institutions - the IDBI Bank Ltd., IFCI Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd. and the State Bank of India (SBI). The Government of Gujarat pledged twenty-three acres of land on which stands the majestic and sprawling EDI campus.
